LOOMING ATOP A WEATHERED iron pole and copper ball, the 1885,
gilded American eagle with a four-foot wing span casts such a powerful
aura, it dominates the gallery. Crafted by an unknown blacksmith,
and long perched above a Massachusetts barn, this relatively affordable,
$1200 piece of American folk art is rising in value, at a time when
compelling folk sculptures, with “tremendous detail and energy”
have surpassed quilts, portraits and paintings.
